To survive in the business world, hard work and perseverance are not enough, you need a strong mentality and the ability to ignore the words of critics. Julia Stewart has set such an example. In the late 1990s, when she was working as the president of Applebee’s, she was told that she would never be the CEO of the company. She could not accept this insult. She left the company. She became the CEO of a rival fast food chain. Later, she bought her old workplace for $ 2.3 billion!
According to a report published in People magazine, Julia was promised the CEO position if she could make Applebee’s profitable. She took on the challenge and built an extraordinary team. Within three years, she completely transformed the company. During this time, both the company’s sales and share price increased significantly. When Julia promised to fulfill her promise after leading the company to its peak of success, a senior executive told her directly that she would never be CEO. This incident changed Julia’s life.
Disappointed by this betrayal, Julia resigned from Applebee’s. She joined rival chain IHOP. There, she spent five years reshaping the brand and showing off her success. After IHOP became successful, she offered to buy Applebee’s in the 2000s. Finally, IHOP bought Applebee’s for $2.3 billion. Then Julia called her old boss and told him that the company no longer needed “both of us.” She had to be “fired”! She told the story in a podcast last April.
After this move, Julia Stewart served as chair and CEO of the parent company, Dine Brands Global, for more than a decade. He is currently a member of the board of directors of Bojangles and the founder of a health app.
