Desk Report:
OpenAI has launched a new social video app called ‘Sora’ with the benefit of creating videos based on artificial intelligence (AI). For now, it has been opened only for iPhone users in the United States and Canada. It can currently be used on an invite-only basis.
Those who initially get access to the app will have the opportunity to invite four more friends. However, OpenAI has not confirmed anything about the Android version yet.
The main attraction of the app is a feature called ‘Cameo’. Through this feature, the user can record a short video. If other users want, they can use this video to create new clips. OpenAI’s advanced Sora 2 model can be used to create these videos.
However, the person whose face is used will be considered the co-owner of the video. If necessary, he will have the full right to delete the video or revoke someone’s access.
The app has a feature called ‘Remix’. It encourages users to connect with current trends and clips. However, the length limit for each video is now 10 seconds.
OpenAI has imposed some strict rules for safety. The app does not allow violent, obscene or extreme content. It also prohibits the use of faces of famous people. However, if the user uploads a ‘cameo’ and gives consent, others can use it.
With the launch of this app, the ‘Sora 2.0’ model has come. It can create more realistic videos than the previous model. It can also create complex stories with multiple scenes by adjusting sound and video. OpenAI says that it can revolutionize video production like ChatGPT.
However, criticism has also started surrounding the app. In a report, the Wall Street Journal said that OpenAI has already warned studios and talent agencies. OpenAI says that if they do not separately ‘opt-out’, their copyrighted content can also be used on Sora.
OpenAI says it sees this as a form of creative participation by fans, much like how people remix memes or images.
However, the company has drawn strict boundaries on the use of someone’s face. Unless someone uploads their own ‘cameo’, their face cannot be used to create a video using AI.
OpenAI has confirmed that the app will be open to everyone in the future. It also plans to launch a pro version, web access and a developer API.
