Jubo League leader attends father’s funeral in handcuffs after being released on 8-hour parole
Md. Maksudur Rahman alias Masuk, a member of the Khaliajuri Upazila Jubo League and the General Secretary of the Upazila Committee of the Muktijuddho Prajonmo League, attended his father’s funeral after being released on parole for 8 hours. He was handcuffed while attending the funeral.
He was released on parole from 6 am to 2 pm today, Thursday (October 2). Later, after the burial, he was sent back to prison.
Maksudur Rahman is the son of freedom fighter Md. Fazlur Rahman, a resident of the Barahati area of Khaliajuri Upazila Sadar.
According to local residents and police sources, Maksudur Rahman’s father Fazlur Rahman died at his home due to old age on Wednesday (October 1) afternoon. Later, when the family members applied for parole, the district administration released him for eight hours.
He was taken to the Khattakpur ferry ghat in Madan Upazila in a police prison van. From there, he was taken to the ferry ghat in the Khaliajuri College Road area by an engine-driven trawler. Later, he was taken on foot from the ferry ghat to the Khaliajuri Upazila Parishad premises. After the funeral, his father’s body was taken to the East Khaliajuri Abora graveyard for burial.
Some eyewitnesses said that when Maksudur Rahman was attending his father’s funeral, two policemen were standing on either side. Although the two policemen attended the funeral, he was surrounded by several policemen from all sides.
At that time, his left hand was handcuffed. A policeman was holding it with a rope attached to the handcuffs.
Police sources said that on July 2, a BNP leader named Majlu Mia filed a case on charges of attack and vandalism at the Khaliajuri Upazila BNP office on July 16 last year. In this case filed under the Special Powers Act, 186 people, including former MP of Netrokona-4 (Mohanganj-Madan-Khaliajuri) constituency Sajjadul Hasan, were named as accused, along with 250 others who were not named.
The police arrested accused number 16 Maksudur in the case and presented him before the Netrokona court on September 13. He has been in jail since then.
When asked about the handcuffs, Khaliajuri Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Maqbul Hossain said that he had one handcuffed during the funeral. In fact, he is a prisoner. He had one handcuffed due to security risks.
