Mithun Manhas to be the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) – This news has been heard for a few days. Finally, it is true. Former coach of Bangladesh Under-19 team Manhas has taken over as the head of the Indian cricket governing body.
The post of BCCI President has been vacant since Roger Binny resigned last month. Vice-President Rajiv Shukla was serving as the interim President. Today, Manhas was elected as the President unopposed at the 94th Annual General Meeting of the BCCI.
In 2017, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) appointed Manhas as the batting consultant of the Under-19 team for a period of two years. Cricketers like Saif Hasan, Naeem Sheikh, Towhid Hridoy, Mahidul Islam Ankan were part of that team.
Apart from being the batting consultant of the Bangladesh youth team, Manhas has experience in coaching in the Indian Premier League (IPL). This former cricketer has played the role of assistant coach of Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Titans.
Manhas was born in Jammu. This is the first time that someone from this region has become the president of BCCI. The 45-year-old Manhas was a familiar face in domestic cricket. However, he has never represented India at the international level. Manhas captained Delhi in the Ranji Trophy. He scored 9714 runs in 157 first-class matches. He hit 27 centuries. He has accumulated 4126 runs with the bat in 130 List ‘A’ matches. He has reached the magic figure of three figures five times. In addition, Manhas has scored 1170 runs in 91 T20Is.
Manhas also has experience of playing IPL. He has played a whopping 55 matches in the crore-taka tournament for Delhi Daredevils, Pune Warriors and Chennai Super Kings. Where he has scored 514 runs at an average of 22.34 with the bat.
