The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) has not yet announced the squad for the AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Singapore. However, Italian expatriate footballer Fahamidul Islam has been called up to the camp. His club Olbia Calcio has confirmed the matter.
In a statement, Olbia said, “Fahamidul has been called up to the national team camp. The official letter reached the club headquarters yesterday morning. The camp will be held ahead of the friendly match on June 4 and the Asian Cup qualifier match against Singapore on June 10.”
Earlier, Fahamidul was also called up for the preliminary squad for the match against India. However, coach Javier Cabrera did not include him in the final squad. So Fahamidul had to return to Italy from the camp in Saudi Arabia. Which sparked a huge controversy. Cabrera said at the time, ‘He is a talented player but needs some more time.’
After the India match, the national team committee recommended that Fahamidul be included in the team. Cabrera himself kept in touch with Fahamidul. He also requested Olbia Calcio to give Fahamidul more playing time.
The national team camp is scheduled to begin on May 31. However, the Premier League will end on May 29. So there is uncertainty about whether the footballers will start training again in two days. Before playing the Singapore match, Bangladesh will play a friendly match against Bhutan on June 4. Both matches will be held at the National Stadium in Dhaka.
