Desk Report:
Mohammad Russell, CEO of e-commerce company E-Valley, and his wife and company chairman Shamima Nasrin have been sentenced to three years in prison in another fraud case. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Monirul Islam announced the verdict on Thursday.
In addition to the prison sentence, they have been fined Tk 10,000 each.
The plaintiff in this case is a customer named Abul Kalam Azad. In the case, he alleged that he was attracted by E-Valley’s eye-catching advertisement and placed a purchase order for 11 motorcycles for Tk 2.3 million. He paid Tk 5 million. Although the goods were supposed to be delivered within 7 to 30 days, it was not done.
The plaintiff did not get the money back. Later, the lawyer sent a notice to Russell and Shamima requesting them to return the money. But even then, they did not return the money.
Later, the plaintiff filed this case in court in 2023. The court ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the allegations.
On March 27 last year, PBI SI Basudeb Sarkar filed a report accusing E-Valley’s Russell and Shamima Nasrin. The court framed charges against the accused on December 9. The court took the testimony of three people during the trial of the case.
The verdict said that the accused had broken the trust of the general public through fraud, which is considered a serious crime.
Plaintiff Abul Kalam Azad confirmed the verdict.
It is worth mentioning that hundreds of fraud cases have been filed against these two E-Valley employees across the country. They have been sentenced in many of these cases. Most recently, on April 13, a Dhaka court sentenced the two to three years in prison in another fraud case.
They were arrested in various cases and later escaped on bail. After the verdict in this case, the court issued an arrest warrant along with a sentence warrant against them.
