DU student Samya murder: 3 arrested, remanded for six days

Three people arrested in a case filed in connection with the murder of Dhaka University (DU) student Shahriar Alam Samya (25) near Mukto Mancha in the capital’s Suhrawardy Udyan have been remanded for six days. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza ordered their remand on Saturday (May 17).

Those who have been ordered to be remanded are—Md. Tamim Howlader (30), Samrat Mallik (28) and Md. Palash Sardar (30).

They were produced before the court from the jail. The investigation officer of the case, SI Toufiq Hasan of Shahbagh Police Station, requested for a 10-day remand of each of them. After the hearing, the court granted a 6-day remand of each of them.

They were sent to jail on May 14. Earlier, they were arrested from Rajabazar and Green Road areas.

On May night, while riding a motorcycle past Muktamancha in Suhrawardy Udyan, Dhaka, he collided with another motorcycle. During an argument, the miscreants attacked Samya with sharp weapons and fled. Later, around midnight, local people took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a bloody state, where the doctor declared him dead.

On the morning of May 14, Samy’s elder brother Shariful Islam filed a murder case with Shahbagh Police Station in the name of 10-12 people.

‎Samy was a student of the 2018-19 academic year at the Institute of Education and Research of the University. He was the literature and publication secretary of the Chhatra Dal of Sir A.F. Rahman Hall branch of Dhaka University. He lived in room number 222 of this hall.

The remand application states that there is evidence that the three arrested accused are involved in the murder. And it is necessary to take them on remand and interrogate them to uncover who is involved and the main mystery of the murder.
