Desk Report:
Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is planning to develop a new high-end chip for its smartphones. The company has taken this initiative to establish more control over its own hardware, following the path of rivals such as Apple and Samsung.
Xiaomi Vice President Xu Fei confirmed the matter to CNBC, saying that the company is planning to develop a new generation of system-on-chip. However, they cannot promise to bring new chips to the market every year like Apple.
Xu Fei said, “We are new in this, we need to learn and plan. So for us, we need to be patient for at least 10 years on this journey, so that the chip business can reach a profitable position. In the first step, we just need to make sure that the performance is good enough and the user experience is satisfactory.”
The company is headquartered in Beijing. Xiaomi is currently focusing on manufacturing and controlling its own various components. By doing this, the company is trying to further increase its share in the premium or expensive smartphone market.
Last year, Xiaomi unveiled its own chip ‘Xring 01’. It is made on advanced 3-nanometer technology. As part of this project, the company has pledged to invest 50 billion yuan (about 7 billion dollars) in chip development over the next decade.
According to Xiaomi’s plan, 1 million Xring 01 units will be supplied initially. Xu Fei said that at least 10 million units must be supplied to make a profit on the development of a chip.
Incidentally, Apple has been unveiling new ‘A’ series chips every year since 2010. Their latest A19 chip was used in the iPhone 17. Apple’s success is largely the result of their deep integration of software and hardware. As a result, the performance and battery management of the chips have become better.
Xiaomi is also currently working on its own Android-based operating system ‘HyperOS’ and its own artificial intelligence platform ‘Hyper AI’. The report states that these platforms will run more efficiently if they use their own chips.
