Principal Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has returned to Dhaka from New York after attending the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 9 am today, Thursday, on an Emirates Airlines flight.
The Principal Advisor’s press wing confirmed the matter.
Earlier, the Principal Advisor left New York at 9:10 am Bangladesh time on Wednesday. Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury and Bangladesh’s Ambassador to the United States Tarek Md. Ariful Islam bid farewell to the Principal Advisor at John F. Kennedy Airport.
This year, the Principal Advisor’s entourage included six politicians. Among them, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP Acting Chairman’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Humayun Kabir, Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Amir Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher, Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain and Joint Convener Dr. Tasnim Zara joined the delegation from Dhaka. In addition, Jamaat leader Naqibur Rahman Tarek joined the delegation from the United States.
On September 26, Professor Yunus addressed the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. In his speech at the General Assembly Hall of the UN Headquarters, the Chief Advisor highlighted the reform activities undertaken by the interim government, the desire for a mass uprising in July 2024, the pledge to hold free and fair elections in February 2026, the trial of the July massacre and the Rohingya crisis.
Muhammad Yunus addressed the opening session of the High-Level Conference on the Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar at the UN Headquarters on Tuesday. He reiterated that the only peaceful solution to the Rohingya crisis is their repatriation to Myanmar and made seven proposals.
He met US President Donald Trump and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at a reception for world leaders.
During the session, Muhammad Yunus was awarded the ‘Unlock Big Change Award’ at the annual high-level Global Education Dinner of The World held in New York.
The Chief Adviser met with Queen Maxima of the Netherlands and Queen Mathilde of Belgium on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. In addition, Dr. Muhammad Yunus met with Albanian President Bajram Begaz, Kosovo President Viosa Osmani, Botswana President Duma Gideon Boko, Finnish President Alexander Stubbs, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, World Bank President Ajay Banga, World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, Club de Madrid President and former Slovenian President Danilo Turk, and US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia and Ambassador-designate to India Sergio Gore met with the Chief Advisor on the sidelines of the session.
