Case filed against Khulna Medical College doctor Shamshun Nahar for torturing domestic worker

Desk Reports:

A case has been filed in court against doctor Shamshun Nahar Lucky for allegedly torturing a domestic worker in Khulna. Doctor Lucky is a professor at Khulna Medical College and the head of the hospital’s gynecology and obstetrics department.

On Tuesday (September 2), domestic worker Aklima Khatun filed a case with the Khulna Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (Sadar Amli) Court, alleging torture. The court judge took cognizance of the case and ordered the PBI to investigate. The next date for the case was fixed for September 30.

Plaintiff’s lawyer M. Maftum Ahmed confirmed the case on Monday (September 8).

The other accused in the case are Lucky’s brother Alimur Reza, Mrs. Mali, Kazi Abul Hasan, Mohammad Ali, Md. Elias, Shawli Hasan and Rad Hasan.

According to the plaintiff’s written complaint, Aklima Khatun worked as a domestic worker at Shamshun Nahar Lucky’s house on Ahsan Ahmed Road in the city from 1999 to 2025. In mid-May of this year, she informed doctor Shamshun Nahar Lucky about her inability to work due to physical and family reasons. The doctor was furious upon hearing this.

On July 27, on the orders of Shamshun Nahar Lucky, Aklima was besieged and physically tortured. Seeing her condition deteriorating, the doctor went into hiding in Dhaka. On August 2, when he returned from Dhaka, he again threatened her. Aklima fell unconscious after being beaten and punched by Alimur Reza and Kazi Abul Hasan, who were present. Later, when she recovered, they threatened her and withdrew Tk 661,400 of the DPS deposited in the bank.

M. Maftum Ahmed further said that even after this incident, Shamshun Nahar Lucky did not stop. On his orders, he detained Aklima again and pressured her to take the land by writing it down, demanding a ransom of 2 lakh taka. Later, his son and brother released him from there by giving a bond.

After this incident, a legal notice was served on doctor Shamshun Nahar Lucky and the matter was reported to the local police station and police commissioner. But the victim did not receive any redress.

Lawyer Maftum Ahmed said that the court has taken cognizance of the case. It has given the investigation of the matter to Khulna PBI. The court has fixed September 30 as the next date for the case.

Aklima’s brother said that after her separation from her husband in 1998, her sister Aklima Khatun took up work as a domestic worker at Shamshun Nahar Lucky’s house. The doctor’s family members tortured her when she said she was quitting her job due to her age. She did not stop even after being tortured. They are continuously threatening her.

When an attempt was made to contact Samshun Nahar Lucky to inquire about the complaint, a call was received from Victory Fertility and IVF Center, which said, “Madam is in Dhaka.” When asked for her mobile number, she refused to provide it.
