Barca legend announces retirement

He is playing for Inter Miami, a club in the US Major League Soccer. However, Sergio Busquets will hang up his boots at the end of the current season in December. The 38-year-old midfielder said this in a retirement message on social media.

Busquets, who won the World Cup and Euros for Spain, has spent almost his entire career at Barcelona. He joined the club’s ‘B’ team in 2005. He started playing for the main team in 2008. Together with Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta, he formed one of the best midfield trios in the world. He has won 32 titles at the club in his 18-year career.

Busquets, who has played the third most matches for Barca with 722, joined Inter Miami in 2023. There, the legendary midfielder was reunited with Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and Jordi Alba. Although the rest of them continued to play, he does not want to play after this year.

In a video message, Busquets said, “The time has come to say goodbye to my professional football career. I have been enjoying this incredible story that I have always dreamed of, for almost 20 years. I am retiring very happy, proud, fulfilled and above all grateful. Thank you very much to everyone.”

Miami secured a place in the Major League Soccer playoffs with a 4-0 win over New York City FC on Wednesday. The 18-team playoffs will begin on October 22 and conclude with the final on December 6.
