Calling them NCP, the BNP claims that the party’s campaign banners and festoons featuring pictures of Khaleda Zia and Shaheed Zia were removed for political reasons.

It is learned that the anti-discrimination students have been removing banners and festoons of political parties from various roads since Thursday morning in order to enhance beauty and preserve trees planted on the roads. Banners and festoons hanging on trees planted on the road dividers including the intersection of Bhanga Road, Medical Road, River Research Road, Rajbari Road, etc. were removed. The organization’s district convener Kazi Riaz, spokesperson Kazi Zeba Tahsin, co-spokesperson Umm Habiba and other members led the removal.

During this time, they removed the banners, festoons and billboards of various political parties including BNP. Leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliates and affiliated organizations are criticizing this incident by calling it political.

That night, former president of the Metropolitan Youth Party, Benazir Ahmed (Tabriz), posted a status on social media. She wrote, “Touching BNP banners and festoons in the name of cleaning the city will not be tolerated. Paknami is increasing, the results will not be good.” Immediately after such a status, leaders and activists of different levels of BNP became angry.

When asked, student movement spokesperson Kazi Zeba Tahsin told Ajker Patrika, “The way banners and festoons are being put up in the city is spoiling its beauty. The banners and festoons were put up mainly to maintain its beauty and as a social responsibility. Not for any political motive. We did not understand that it would be taken politically. NCP has nothing to do with our eviction drive.”

Kazi Zeba Tahsin also said, “Since this incident, we have been threatened in various ways. Co-spokesperson Umm Habiba has been threatened by phone. BNP people are looking for many of us to beat up. We are insecure.”
