Anti-discrimination leader Mamun rescued after five days, admitted to hospital

Desk Report:

Police have rescued Maulana Mamunur Rashid, the former joint convener of the anti-discrimination student movement and an active activist of the July Movement, after he was missing for five days. Police from Turag Police Station rescued him in an ill condition from a mosque in Sector 1 of Purbachal in the capital around 2 pm on Friday.

Turag Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monirul Islam Monir said, “Upon receiving the news, the police went to the spot and rescued Mamun and admitted him to Kuwait Friendship Hospital. The family members have been informed and they are going to the hospital.”

A senior official of Dhaka Metropolitan Police told Fast Bangla that the matter will be presented to the media in detail through a press conference after the initial interrogation of Mamun.

Earlier, Mamun went missing after leaving his house wearing a Punjabi and pyjamas on the morning of September 21. The youth organization of the National Citizen Party (NCP) Jatiya Yuboshakti revealed the matter at a press conference in Uttara area last Wednesday night.

The leaders of the organization complained that despite searching in various places, he could not be found. A general diary was filed at the local police station in this regard. In addition, the matter was reported to RAB, PBI, Counter Terrorism Unit and the Home Ministry. A 24-hour ultimatum was also given by Yubashakti demanding the rescue of Mamun.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, NCP’s southern region chief organizer Hasnat Abdullah expressed concern on his verified Facebook ID, writing, “The state has failed to ensure minimum security for citizens. The negligence of the government and the failure of the law enforcement agencies have become clear in the incident of Mamun’s disappearance and failure to find him.” At the same time, he also questioned the “silent role” of the media. He fears that the old culture of fear may return to politics through such incidents.

Family members formed a human chain in front of the National Museum in Shahbagh in the capital on Friday, demanding the search for Mamun. There, they demanded that Mamun be returned to his family in good health within 24 hours.
