Cows roaming in Sherpur Sadar Hospital, storm of criticism

Desk Report:

A picture of two cows entering the 250-bed Sadar Hospital in Sherpur has gone viral on social media. Netizens have been criticizing the incident on Facebook since Sunday night.

It was learned that a service seeker saw the two cows inside the hospital last night. Later, he took a picture of the cow and posted it on Facebook, which went viral instantly.

In the post, a teacher named Rabiul Alam Tuku wrote in the comment, ‘Multidimensional institution, brother. Hospital by day, cowshed by night, or treating people by day, cows by night. Who knows if there are any other service works?’

A person named Md. Rubel Mia wrote, ‘The cows might have fallen ill. That’s why they are coming to the hospital for treatment. What is there to condemn in this?’

Manikur Rahman Pavel wrote, ‘There is no hospital anymore, it has become a cowshed.’

Rahman Mostafiz Babu wrote, ‘Until the common people raise their voices together against these, these irregularities will continue.’ Sair Uddin Mallick wrote, ‘There is no treatment here. Even if there is a mild fever, the patient is sent to Mymensingh. There needs to be a remedy for this.’

Morshed Jitu, the former chief organizer of the anti-discrimination student movement, wrote in his Facebook post, ‘Cows were moving around in the hospital last night – this is nothing new. The situation has taken a terrible turn due to the failure to eradicate corruption, irregularities and brokers in the hospital.’

Md. Al-Amin Raju, director of the voluntary organization Rakta Sainik, said that this hospital was supposed to be a place of trust for the people of the district, but instead of that, it is like another name for suffering, Sherpur District Sadar Hospital. He demanded that the quality of hospital services be improved and security measures be strengthened as soon as possible.

Rabiul Islam Ratan, founding president of the voluntary organization Ajker Tarunya, said, “This pathetic condition of Sherpur District Hospital is due to lack of responsibility. If the caretaker had performed his duties properly, it would not have reached this state. We have been doing various things to improve the quality of services at the hospital. However, the hospital authorities have no intention of doing anything good.”

When asked about this, hospital caretaker Selim Miah told Ajker Patrika, “It is not my responsibility to guard the cows in the hospital.” Saying this, he hung up the phone.

However, Sherpur Civil Surgeon Muhammad Shaheen said, “I visited the hospital immediately after learning about the incident. This incident occurred due to the negligence of the Ansars on duty at the gate. Action is being taken in this regard.”

Muhammad Shaheen also said that Selim Miah’s behavior is not indicative of responsibility. Discussions are underway on the matter.
