Desk Report:
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has announced a new program with five demands, including holding national elections in February. The party’s central Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher announced the program at a press conference held at Al Falah Auditorium in Moghbazar, Dhaka, on Monday (September 15) morning.
At the press conference, the Nayeb-e-Ameer said that there is no alternative to holding free, fair and acceptable elections based on the July National Charter to overcome the country’s ongoing political crisis. Jamaat-e-Islami has raised these five-point demands with the aim of establishing the people’s right to vote and building a democratic state.
The demands include holding elections in February based on the July National Charter, introducing the PR system in the national elections, ensuring a level playing field, prosecuting the fascist government’s oppression, torture and corruption, and banning the activities of the Jatiya Party and the 14 parties.
He also said that if the people’s just demands are not implemented, there is no alternative to a mass movement. For this, Jamaat has announced to hold a series of programs.
The program includes a rally and protest march in Dhaka on September 18, protests in all divisional cities of the country on September 19, and protest marches in all districts and upazilas on September 26.
Taher demanded that the July National Charter should be given a legal basis to resolve the political crisis. Otherwise, the people’s sacrifices and the achieved uprising may end in failure.
He also said that there is no alternative to establishing the people’s right to vote in order to build a democracy and an accountable state.
