Desk Report:
The government is considering releasing older prisoners and those sentenced to long terms of imprisonment, taking into account their crimes. This information was given by Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury after the meeting of the Core Committee on Law and Order on Sunday.
The Home Affairs Advisor said, “If a criminal is 20 years old and has been sentenced to 20 years in prison, he can return and commit crimes again. These issues will be taken into consideration.”
The Home Affairs Advisor also said that currently the maximum life sentence for both men and women is 30 years. This is being considered to be reduced. In particular, the maximum sentence for women will be reduced to 20 years and for men too.
The Home Affairs Advisor said that the meeting discussed the blockade program of residents of two unions of Faridpur in protest against the redrawing of parliamentary constituencies. He said that strict legal action will be taken against them if they do not leave the road immediately.
The Home Affairs Advisor further said, “It is not desirable to cause public suffering by blocking roads. Their complaints should be filed through proper channels. In no way can people from two unions block roads like this and cause suffering to thousands of people. If they do not lift this blockade immediately, their blockade will be lifted through law enforcement.”
