150,000 police officers to receive special training to perform election duties

More than 150,000 police officers will be trained to ensure a fair and secure national election in February next year.

Government officials announced this information on Friday.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Kazi Zia Uddin told BSS, “We will provide all necessary training to 150,000 or more police personnel to ensure a free, fair, impartial and peaceful national election.”

Zia Uddin, the officer-in-charge of the Human Resources (HR) Development Department at the Police Headquarters, hopes that the upcoming elections will be a ‘milestone’ in the country’s history.

He said his department has developed nine training modules in the last three months with the advice of election experts and lawyers.

Zia Uddin said the training course, led by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Additional IGP (HR), was ‘great’.

He hopes that the course will prepare police members to successfully deal with any kind of law and order situation during the election.

Bangladesh Police has 130 small and four large training centers across the country. Police members will be trained in these centers to perform election duties.

Zia Uddin said that as part of the election training, they have produced two documentaries, a 15-minute audio-visual content and a 9-minute film, as well as a booklet.

In the future, there are plans to create 1,292 master trainers or ‘trainers of trainers (TOTs)’ at 19 police training centers across the country. They will train more than 150,000 police personnel to perform election duties in the future.

The police headquarters official said that all trainers will be given realistic drills to deal with possible situations during the election.

He said that these activities are being conducted to ensure comprehensive security during the election period.

DIG Zia said that the police headquarters will organize a ceremony at Rajarbagh Police Lines at the end of this week to mark the official inauguration of the training program.
