‘Bad Touch’: Protests demand resignation of college teacher in Demra

A teacher named Mizanur Rahman of Demra University College in the capital has been accused of sexually harassing several female students. Students and guardians protested on the college campus on Wednesday afternoon demanding the resignation of the teacher from the college’s accounting department.

The protesters displayed placards reading ‘One point, one demand – resignation’, ‘Not the victim of bullying, but injustice’, ‘We want justice’, and ‘Raise your voice against bad touch’.

Tensions were seen in the area last week when a video of students’ allegations against the college teacher went viral on Facebook.

In this context, the college authorities have formed a seven-member investigation committee today. The committee has been asked to submit the investigation report next Monday.

Meanwhile, some students of the college as well as local teachers in the area have taken the side of the accused teacher. They have called the incident ‘false and conspiratorial’ and demanded a fair trial.

Some local people say that the college’s image has been damaged as a result of this incident.

Regarding the students’ complaints, teacher Mizanur Rahman told the media, “About 6-7 months ago, I lightly hit the students with a duster who were creating chaos, including a student who was absent from class and sleeping. Then they got angry with me and complained to the principal about bad touch, and he warned me.”

“In addition, there were allegations that I intentionally made those students fail the exam; which was later proven to be false.”

Regarding this, Demra University College Principal Dr. Noor Alam told the media that the culprit will be identified and punished through a fair investigation.
