Desk Report:
The Awami League party will be banned through legal process and there is no other option but to do so, said Sarjis Alam, the chief organizer of the National Citizens Party (NCP) in the northern region. He made these comments while talking to reporters while visiting the Durga Puja pavilion in Maligaon Tentultala in Atwari upazila of Panchagarh on Wednesday.
Sarjis Alam said that being deprived of the Shapla symbol despite fulfilling all the legal qualifications is unfair and discriminatory. He alleged that if the Election Commission follows the path of arbitrariness due to pressure or fear, then the NCP will express its distrust of them.
The NCP leader in the northern region said, “We have made it clear from the beginning that we had no legal obstacle to getting the Shapla symbol. We wanted the Shapla symbol.” Now what we feel is that the Election Commission is acting arbitrarily and discriminatoryly out of fear or pressure of something that they will not give us the lotus symbol.’
Sarjis said, ‘We have now achieved all the qualifications to register as a political party. There is no obstacle for us to get it. We have started our journey for a year but it has not happened yet, which is why a large group is facing a huge headache with our symbol. They are not able to bear the burden and pressure of the symbol.
‘If a constitutional institution behaves in such an arbitrary manner in a post-coup Bangladesh, and we firmly believe that, fair elections are not possible in this country by them. If they maintain this, the NCP will express no confidence in going to the elections through this Election Commission in the coming days.
Regarding the statement of the Chief Advisor that the activities of the Awami League can be activated, Sarjis Alam said, “If he now, for various reasons, forgets all the sacrifices and hardships of the people of Bangladesh in the international arena, forgets all the blood and lives shed, and starts dressing up as a civil servant to check and balance his image, if he actually gives this statement that the activities of the Awami League can be activated again, forgetting such a big event like this coup, then we can only say this—the people of Bangladesh can make concessions, but they will not give up.
Such a big country, the aspirations of so many people, the coup—sacrifices everything. We have to check and balance our image in the international arena—we did not see such people in that place and put them there with that eye as our chief advisors.’
The NCP leader also said, ‘Killer Sheikh Hasina’—this writing has been written on the walls of Bangladesh. Those who are now beneficiaries of the interim government can forget it from their place. The mother who touched the body of her polar with her own hands, that mother will not be able to forget it. As long as that mother does not forget, we fought on the streets in this coup, we will not forget this, nor will we let it be forgotten.
‘We say one thing clearly. There will be no more politics of Awami League in this Bangladesh. The political activities of Awami League have been banned. Awami League will be banned as a party through legal process and it has to be done, there is no other option but this.’
