The UK has announced a new humanitarian aid package of 27 million pounds for the Rohingya who have taken refuge in Bangladesh from neighboring Myanmar. Under this, more than 500,000 Rohingya will be provided assistance.
This information was given in a statement by the British High Commission in Dhaka on Wednesday.
It said that this assistance was announced at the UN High-Level Conference on the Situation of the Rohingya and Other Minorities in Myanmar. Under this, food, shelter, clean water, sanitation, healthcare and other essential services will be provided to Rohingya refugees and vulnerable local communities in Cox’s Bazar and surrounding areas.
In addition, 175,000 women and girls will be provided with sexual and reproductive health services and support for those who are sexually, physically and mentally affected.
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said that this funding will directly help improve the quality of life on the ground.
Yvette Cooper said that this new UK aid for the Rohingya community in Bangladesh will provide food, shelter, clean water and other life-saving services. At the same time, support will be provided to the local Bangladeshi community.
The British minister said that the UK will work tirelessly to ensure that those displaced by the violence receive the support, protection, dignity and opportunities they deserve.
Since 2017, the UK has provided more than 447 million pounds or 447 million pounds in assistance to the Rohingya crisis.
The announcement said that the UK’s new funding will be channeled through the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the World Food Programme (WFP), UNHCR, UNICEF, UNFPA, several international NGOs, as well as multilateral and private organizations.
The main areas of support are camp management, food assistance, sanitation, education, skills development, climate-resilient agriculture and support for people with disabilities.
UK officials said that sustained international coordination is essential to address the root causes of displacement in Myanmar and ensure unhindered humanitarian assistance for people still in dire conditions in Rakhine State.
In the statement, the UK reiterated the importance of its historic partnership with Bangladesh and highlighted its deep relationship through development, trade, climate cooperation and the Commonwealth.
