US President Donald Trump has said that it will be mandatory to have a voter ID to vote. President Trump announced on Saturday that he will issue an executive order, which will make voter ID mandatory for every voter.
Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, “A voter ID must be present for every vote. No exceptions! I am going to issue an executive order on this.”
Trump also said that only seriously ill people and military personnel stationed abroad will be able to vote by mail. No one else.
Trump has long questioned the US electoral process. He still claims that his loss to Democratic President Joe Biden in the 2020 election was the result of widespread voter fraud, although this claim has been proven to be baseless. In addition, Trump and his Republican allies have repeatedly complained that a large number of non-citizens voted, which is illegal and in reality is very rare.
In recent years, Trump has also called for the banning of electronic voting machines. He has stood in favor of paper ballots and hand counting. But election officials say the process is time-consuming, expensive and less accurate than machine counting.
Trump pledged in early August to issue an executive order to end mail-in voting and the use of voting machines. It is scheduled to take effect before the 2026 midterm elections. However, federal elections in the United States are governed by states, which has raised uncertainty about whether the president has the constitutional authority to take such action.
The November 3, 2026, election will be the first national referendum on Trump’s policies and administration since he returned to office in January. In the election, Democrats will try to break Republican influence in the House and Senate, so as to block Trump’s domestic policies.
