Sohel Taj wanted to go to the US, but was turned away from the airport

Desk Report:

Tajuddin Ahmed’s son and former State Minister for Home Affairs Tanzim Ahmed Sohel Taj was stopped at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on his way to the United States. He was turned back by immigration last Wednesday. A senior officer of the Special Branch (SB) of the police confirmed the matter on Friday night.

Sohel Taj was elected as a Member of Parliament from Gazipur-4 (Kapasia) constituency in the 2001 elections during the previous Awami League government. He was re-elected from the same constituency in 2008 and took charge as the State Minister for Home Affairs in the Awami League-led cabinet on January 6, 2009. However, he resigned from the cabinet on May 31 of that year, citing ‘personal reasons’.

Later, on April 23, 2012, he also submitted his resignation as a Member of Parliament. However, due to procedural reasons, it was not accepted immediately, and when he submitted his resignation again on July 7, it was accepted. At that time, he complained that his work was being ‘obstructed’ and his instructions were being ‘disobeyed’. For these reasons, he decided to leave politics.

Although he has not been active in politics since then, he has been in the news for his political views on social media. Recently, he also made headlines for announcing the launch of a lifestyle reality show, ‘Hotline Commando’, on a private television.

Earlier, on July 17, Sohel Taj, along with his elder sister Sharmin Ahmed, paid a courtesy call on the interim government’s Chief Advisor, Professor Muhammad Yunus, at the Jamuna State Guest House. The press wing of the chief advisor said that the meeting was held to invite him to the birth centenary ceremony of Bangladesh’s first Prime Minister, Tajuddin Ahmed.
