Desk Report:
US President Donald Trump is going to give a plan to the leaders of the Muslim world to end the war in Gaza and the future of the Palestinian territories. He is going to meet with the leaders of Arab and Muslim countries on Tuesday. According to a report by Qatar-based media outlet Al Jazeera, the White House press secretary Caroline Levitt confirmed that the meeting will be held in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia and Pakistan will be present at the meeting. According to US and Israeli media sources, Trump will discuss with them the possibility of withdrawing Israeli troops from Gaza, sending peacekeeping forces from regional countries and the reconstruction process and its financing.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said at the two-state solution conference hosted by France and Saudi Arabia at the United Nations on Monday, “We are ready to participate in the peace journey.” We are willing to send peacekeepers.’ Earlier on Sunday, the UK, Canada, Australia and Portugal recognised Palestine as a state. France joined the list on Monday.
Sources say that Israel did not draft Trump’s proposal, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been informed about it. Although the plan is supposed to include the Palestinian Authority (PA), Hamas is said to have no role. The US and Israel have repeatedly demanded that Hamas must be disarmed and eliminated to ensure Israel’s security.
Meanwhile, the nearly two-year-old Gaza war has already claimed the lives of more than 65,000 Palestinians, most of whom are civilians. Although progress was made in Qatar-brokered ceasefire talks earlier this month, the situation has been further complicated by Israeli forces’ assassination attempts on Hamas leaders living in Qatar.
Dozens of civilians have been killed every day in the ongoing airstrikes and ground operations in Gaza City, and thousands have fled south. Since the collapse of a ceasefire with Hamas in March, Israel has tightened its blockade, exacerbating the famine.
In this situation, the US media Fox News reported that Hamas has sent a letter to Trump offering to release half of the hostages in exchange for a 60-day ceasefire. The letter is said to be delivered to Trump via Qatar, although Qatar or Hamas have not officially commented on the matter.
