Administration officials involved in attack on Akhtar-Zara: Nahid Islam

Desk Report:

The party’s convener, Nahid Islam, has alleged that ‘administration officials are involved’ in the attack on National Citizens Party (NCP) member secretary Akhtar Hossain and senior joint member secretary Tasnim Zara at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, USA.

He made this allegation at an emergency press conference at the NCP’s temporary office at Rupayan Trade Center in Bangla Motor in the capital on Tuesday.

Nahid Islam said, ‘Akhtar Hossain and Tasnim Zara were attacked and reprimanded while leaving the airport in New York. Earlier, Mahfuz Alam was attacked. Administration officials are involved in these. Information is being leaked from within. Such incidents are happening because no action has been taken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the government.’

Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s entourage included Akhtar Hossain and Tasnim Zara.

Witnesses said that when Akhtar Hossain was leaving Terminal 4 of the airport, he was thrown an egg by Jubo League activist Mizanur Rahman. They also said that Awami League leaders, activists and supporters who were already there pushed Tasnim Zara.

At a press conference today, the NCP convener said, ‘We didn’t want to go. We agreed to Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s call. It is the responsibility of the government and the administration to ensure the safety and respect of those in the delegation. The government has failed to ensure this. This attack is not an isolated incident; these are being carried out continuously.’

Nahid believes that despite repeated calls from the government to prosecute the Awami League, attacks are happening because it is not being done.

He said, ‘There is no chance of bringing the Awami League to the elections. We want to make it clear that there is no chance of bringing the Awami League to the elections or rehabilitating the Awami League in politics. Those who try to do this, the people will stand against them. Their politics will not be removed from Bangladesh.’

The press conference was also attended by NCP Senior Joint Member Secretary Nahida Sarwar Nibha, Joint Convener Dr. Tajnubha Jabin and others.
