The New York Police Department (NYPD) has arrested Jubo League activist Mizanur Rahman for allegedly throwing eggs at Akhtar Hossain, a member secretary of the National Citizens Party (NCP), who was accompanying the interim government’s chief advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus. He is also accused of attempting to stab a BNP activist.
The incident took place at around 5 pm on Monday (September 22) at Terminal 4 of New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. Witnesses said that Jubo League activist Mizanur threw eggs at Akhtar Hossain, the chief advisor’s entourage, as he was leaving the airport. Awami League leaders, activists and supporters were present there at the time.
Witness Sulaiman Haque told the media that after the incident, a BNP supporter complained to the police that Mizanur Rahman had tried to stab him with a knife. Based on this complaint, the New York Police Department arrested Mizanur.
After the protest, the police arrested him from Bangladesh Street in Jackson Heights at around 9:30 pm on the same day. After being detained, Mizanur Rahman raised the slogan ‘Joy Bangla’. Awami League leaders and activists present with him also raised slogans.
According to NYPD sources, Mizanur Rahman will have to stay in jail all night and will be produced in court the next day.
At the time of the incident, Akhtar Hossain was accompanied by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and NCP Senior Joint Member Secretary Tasnim Zara. Local Awami League leaders and activists also targeted Tasnim Zara and staged protests there.
The chief advisor and his entourage are currently staying at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Manhattan. The US Awami League had already obtained permission to protest there. In the evening, both sides protested there with opposing slogans. NCP leader Akhtar Hossain demanded justice in the incident.
