The body of five-year-old Roja Moni was found in a pile of garbage in Tejkunipara area of Tejgaon, Dhaka. A day after she went missing on Monday (May 12) afternoon, her body was found wrapped in a sack in a drain about 100 meters away from her home on Tuesday morning.
Roja’s 9-year-old elder sister irin akter end another sister Suborna Akter saw a suspiciously heavy sack in the garbage and opened it to see the body.
Tejgaon police said on Tuesday that the child was strangled to death and then scalded with hot water. Later, the child was wrapped in a bag and thrown into a drain. A rope was tied around the child’s neck. The body has been sent to the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College morgue for an autopsy. Police have collected CCTV camera footage to identify those involved in the incident.
Roja’s mother, Shilpi Akhter, said that 13 days ago, they rented a tin shed in Tejkunipara for 3,500 taka. After coming to Dhaka from Raipura in Narsingdi in search of livelihood, she took up work in the household and put her two teenage daughters to work in the garment factory.
Demanding justice for the child’s murder, Shilpi Akhter said in a tearful voice, “My mother did not commit any enmity. Why did she kill her? I want justice.
“Tejgaon Police Station OC Mobarak Hossain said that the investigation into the incident is underway. Multiple teams are working. The criminals will be identified and brought to justice soon.
