Desk Report:
An emergency meeting of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has been held from noon today without any prior announcement. Vice-President Mahbub Anam and Kazi Inam Ahmed joined the meeting virtually. President Aminul Islam Bulbul, Vice-President Nazmul Abedin Fahim, Directors Salahuddin Ahmed, Iftekhar Rahman Mithu and Fahim Sinha were present in person. Akram Khan was not present at the board meeting. Barrister Mahin M Rahman was present as the legal advisor.
It is believed that the focus of the meeting was the issue of sending councilors in the upcoming elections. The District and Divisional Sports Organizers Association has already requested the DCs and divisional commissioners not to send new councilors from Category-1. In the meantime, legal action has also been threatened.
This crisis began on September 11, when the Cabinet Department gave instructions to the field administration. But most of the district and divisional sports organizations did not comply. Although 53 forms were submitted to the BCB under the signatures of the District Administrators and Divisional Commissioners, during the interim government, all the district and divisional committees were dissolved and an ad hoc committee was formed. BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul ordered to send new councilors from there. District and divisional sports organizers outside the ad hoc committee strongly objected to this.
They alleged that there is no logic in why a new list was asked after the councilors were already finalized under the signatures of the administration, and why the ad hoc committee ordered to send names. They claimed that the BCB President’s letter is against the constitution of the BCB and local organizations. According to Article 12.7 of the constitution, there is no scope for sending councilors again. Similarly, according to Articles 12.7 and 14.2. 1, the president also does not have the power to give new instructions. According to the constitution approved by the National Sports Council, the Ministry of Youth and Sports also does not have the right to interfere in the BCB elections.
Earlier, anger has also been building among the district and divisional organizers over the repeated extension of the deadline for submitting councilor nominations. On top of that, the special directive letter sent by the BCB president to the Youth and Sports Secretary on Thursday has further complicated the situation. The angry councilors are now preparing to take legal action, the District and Divisional Sports Organizing Association said.
However, not only the councilor controversy, several other important issues may be decided in today’s emergency meeting. These include the resolution of the ownership dispute of four clubs and the issue of councilor nominations for 14 clubs in the third division.
