Chaksu election: 10 panels including Chhatra Dal-Shibir announced

Desk Report:

Chittagong University Central Student Union (CHAKSU) elections have finally announced 10 panels. On Thursday, various organizations including Chhatra Dal, Left Student Organization and Chhatra Shibir announced these panels. However, the three discussed coordinators of the CU anti-discrimination movement are not participating in this election.

Meanwhile, 1,162 nominations have been collected for the Central Union and Hall Union, but 931 candidates have submitted nomination forms.

After a long 35 years, the Chittagong University Central Student Union (CHAKSU) and Hall Union elections are going to be organized. About 27,000 students will vote in this election. Voting will be held on October 12. The initial list of candidates will be published on September 21. The last date for withdrawal of candidacy is September 23. The final list of candidates will be published on September 25.

Earlier, the panel was announced by Chhatra Dal yesterday. Sajjad Hossain, a student of the Philosophy Department, will contest for the post of Vice President (VP) in this panel, and Md. Shafayat Hossain, a student of the Sports Science Department, has been nominated for the post of General Secretary. At 2 pm, the organization’s central general secretary Nasir Uddin announced the panel of Chhatra Dal at the campus’s intellectual square. He said, “Despite various irregularities and biased behavior in the student parliament elections in other educational institutions of the country, we are participating in all the elections.

We are not getting the desired cooperation from the Chittagong University administration in the Chaksu elections either. Here too, the administration has been extremely partisan and they have behaved one-sidedly. They are acting biased towards a specific organization.”

The name of the Islami Chhatra Shibir’s panel in the Chaksu elections is ‘Sampriti Chhatra Shibir Jote’. The panel was announced by the central human resources secretary of Chhatra Shibir Saidul Islam at 3 pm yesterday at Jarultola on the campus. Ibrahim Hossain, president of Chhatra Shibir’s Chittagong Metropolitan South and an MPhil student in the history department, will contest for the post of vice president (VP) from this panel. Sayeed Bin Habib, literary secretary of the university branch Chhatra Shibir and a postgraduate student in the history department, will contest for the post of general secretary (GS).

Saidul Islam, the central leader of the student wing, said, “Our panel is inclusive. Just as there are different types of students here, female students have also got a place.”

Meanwhile, a panel supported by the left-wing student organization Ganatantrik Chhatra Jote was also announced yesterday in the Chaksu elections. Dhrub Barua, the organizer of the branch Ganatantrik Chhatra Council, will contest for the post of vice president (VP) from this panel named ‘Unity of Diversity’. Sudarshan Chakma, the general secretary of the Pahari Chhatra Parishad (UPDF-backed), will contest for the post of general secretary (GS). Zakirul Islam, the president of the branch Biplabi Chhatra Maitree, will contest for the post of associate general secretary (AGS) in this panel. He is known as Jashad Zakir. There are 11 Pahari students in this 26-post panel.

This information was given at a press conference at 5:30 pm yesterday at the hut of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities on the campus. Ronal Chakma, the former president of the university branch Pahari Chhatra Parishad, announced the panel at the press conference.

VP candidate Dhruba Barua said at the press conference, “Our panel has been named ‘Unity of Diversity’ with a message of unity. We have formed a united panel consisting of various political, social, caste-based organizations and ordinary students in the university.”

Meanwhile, a full-fledged panel has been announced under the name ‘Independent Students’ Union’. In this, Mahfuzur Rahman, the central joint convener of the Democratic Students’ Union (Bagsas), will be elected as the vice president (VP), R. M. Rashidul Haque Dinar, the recently expelled organizer of Bagsas, will be elected as the general secretary (GS), and Jannatul Ferdous will be elected as the associate general secretary (AGS).

Three coordinators discussed are missing

Three students of Chittagong University played a role in accelerating the movement in Chittagong during the July mass uprising. They are Russell Ahmed, Khan Talat Mahmud Rafi and Al Masnoon. These three were the coordinators of the CU’s anti-discrimination student movement. Two of the three are leaders of the Democratic Students’ Union (Bagsas). Rafi is the central joint convener of Bagsas and Masnoon is the member secretary of the CU branch. In addition, Russell Ahmed is the central organizer of the National Citizens Party (NCP). It is learned that they are not participating in the elections due to internal conflicts, lack of coordination and the failure of the center to get out of the center after the debacle in DUCSU and JACSU.

Al Masnoon said, “I have personally decided not to participate in the elections. No panel is being given from the organization either.”
