12-point urgent instructions from the Department of Health for the treatment of dengue patients

Desk Report:

As the dengue outbreak is increasing in the country, the Directorate General of Health Services has issued 12 urgent instructions for the treatment of this mosquito-borne disease. The instructions have been sent to the directors of all medical colleges and specialized hospitals in the country, superintendents of district headquarters hospitals, civil surgeons and upazila health and family welfare officers on Tuesday (September 16).

These instructions were given in a letter signed by the Director of Health Services (Hospitals and Clinics) Abu Hossain Md. Moinul Ahsan.

The officials of the department said that this step has been taken to ensure proper treatment of patients as dengue infection has started increasing in the country.

The instructions state that dengue patients should be tested for NS-1 on an urgent basis and should contact CMSD or CDC for the kit. All necessary tests should be made available for admitted patients at all times and the availability of medicines and other materials required for dengue treatment in the hospital should be ensured.

In addition to keeping admitted patients in specific wards or rooms, a board should be formed with medicine, children and related experts. Under the supervision of that board, a separate team of medical officers, residents and doctors in training will work, who will only treat dengue and chikungunya patients.

Outpatients who are suspected of being infected with dengue or chikungunya will have to be treated in a separate room under a specialist board. If there is ICU facility, priority will be given to dengue patients.

A nurse will be given the responsibility of storing and sending patient information. If a patient dies, a brief information will be sent to the Directorate General of Health Services within six hours and a detailed report within 24 hours.

In addition, a letter will be sent to the city corporation or the mayor of the municipality to keep the hospital area clean and carry out mosquito control activities. Instructions have been given to hold dengue coordination meetings every Saturday morning under the chairmanship of the hospital director, superintendent or civil surgeon. If necessary, other district hospitals will also be able to implement these instructions.

Abu Hossain Md. Mainul Ahsan told fast bangla that after seeing these instructions, it may seem that everything is as before. However, the reality is that now dengue treatment will be under the supervision of a specialist team in a hospital. The same team of doctors will treat in the same ward or at the same location. In addition, some important instructions have been given.
